In 1846, two months before Gabriel Faure was about to celebrate his first birthday, the Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax took out a patent on his new musical hybrid, the Saxophone. This was no more than an interesting chronological coincidence. However, the works which Faure went on to compose were to contain some of the most beautiful and expressive melodic material ever written, material which lends itself so well to transcription for saxophone. During much of Faure's life, the saxophone was in its infancy and very few composers were inspired to write original material for the instrument. Had it been more established, I am sure that the saxophone would have featured greatly in the works of such composers as Faure, as it is one of the most expressive musical instruments ever to be invented.
This album has been compiled and arranged with the prime intention of providing saxophonists with the opportunity of playing a wide variety of music by Debussy. The pieces chosen are of moderate difficulty satisfying the needs of both student and professional alike. They also help to bridge the "repertoire gap" between the very elementary and the very advanced, as most of the material available for saxophone today seems to fall into these categories. These pieces are musically very satisfying as the style of Debussy lends itself so well to the saxophone.
